“Country Club Chic”: The Fashion Behind the Green Jackets

The Masters—the classiest event in all of sports. If you aren’t a golf fan, the Masters might just change your mind. Combining the best golfers in the league, the iconic green jacket, and fashion to die for, you can understand why we call this “Country Club Chic.” Whether it’s Tiger Woods rocking his famous red shirt and black pants combo or Rickie Fowler in his always colorful fits, golf has a style of its own, and it’s time we talk about it.

History of THE Green Jacket

Originally worn by members of the Augusta National Golf Club, these coats have become the most coveted prize in golf. Bobby Jones is the man to thank for this tradition. It all started after he attended the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Club in 1930, where he noticed that all the club’s captains were dressed in matching red jackets. After winning The Open and being gifted one of these red jackets, Bobby went on to suggest the idea to Augusta when they opened three years later.

When Sam Snead became the first Masters winner in 1949, the tradition of the green jacket was put into motion and has been awarded to many of our favorite players since. Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic Masters outfits, jacket included.

Tiger Woods

Dressed in the same red Nike shirt and black trousers for nearly every Masters, Tiger Woods knows what it is like to be a champion. Tiger has won the Masters title five times: in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019.

In his 1997 win, Woods became the youngest player to win the Masters at 21 years old and won by a record 12 strokes. Then, in 2001, Tiger won again, making him the first golfer to hold all four major championship titles simultaneously.

Track and field star, fitness model, and wife to PGA golfer Rickie Fowler, Allison Stokke brought beauty to the Masters course. Serving as her then-boyfriend's caddy in 2018, Allison stunned in this white Masters jumpsuit paired with a “Masters green” hat.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler is well-known for his out-there outfits on the green, and we have supported him through every neon shirt, camo pants, or orange two-piece he puts on. Appearing in many tournaments in the most outlandish looks, we love a confident king.

Bryson DeChambeau

Someone call Sharpay, because this man is giving Ryan Evans from High School Musical. Bryson DeChambeau has rocked a newsboy hat on multiple occasions at the Masters, making the resemblance obvious. Having yet to win a Masters green jacket, Bryson is set to appear in this year's Masters.

After apologizing for his comment, saying Augusta is a “par 67,” Bryson has gushed over the course and is ready to be back in the competition for this iconic coat.

John Daly

Talk about a true style icon

Appearing in the Masters twelve times, this Santa Claus look-alike took the golf world by storm with his exotic outfits. Finishing with his career-best of third place in the 1993 Masters, John Daly might not have taken home a green coat, but he is a winner in our fashion book.

The Masters starts Thursday, April 10th, and runs till that Sunday, the 13th. Tune in for all the fashion and the green jacket ceremony!
