Our Favorite Lessons from Netflix’s New Show ‘Receiver’
While we wait for September, Netflix has filled the football-shaped void in our lives with the release of its new documentary series, ‘Receiver.’ Following five top wide receivers throughout the 2023 NFL season, the series shares a glimpse of what their lives look like on and off the field.
The show provides a rare and unfiltered look at what it takes to be one of the best in the league. While we often witness players' impressive performances during games, that's just a glimpse of all that contributes to their greatness. This documentary allows us to see the hard work, relentless drive, ongoing training, perseverance through injuries, and the cultivation of positive results. As we watched the behind-the-scenes action, experiencing the joys and struggles accompanying the journey, we realized that the most important lessons didn't solely pertain to football. Here are the key takeaways from each player while watching the first four episodes.
George Kittle Proves Happy-Go-Lucky is the Way to Go
The San Francisco 49ers tight end sneakily infiltrated the cast, as his position allows him “to do everything.” His unbelievable football skills are on full display, but we also got to experience his incredibly optimistic spirit and unwavering zest for life. He expresses these qualities through words of affirmation, positive mantras, and even self-high fives, using them as powerful tools to stay focused and enjoy every moment to the fullest, whether achieving a career milestone or getting a direct bump to his sensitive parts. His unbreakable spirit is contagious and a source of motivation for everyone around him, and it also helps that he has Claire, one of the most stylish WAGs in the league, beside him to support him along the way. Whether hosting parties with her on their epic Kittle party bus or setting intentions to manifest his dreams, he has proven that the right attitude will always be the most essential skill to have.
Deebo Samuel's Champion Power is Fueled by Dad Strength
Some thoughts that came to us while watching the Deebo segments were, “Is he real? Are we sure he’s human and not a powerful creation destined for football greatness? Has anyone actually been able to tackle him, ever?” Once the scene cut to his training session, self-described to be fueled by “championship power,” it all made sense. But it’s not all about winning, as he also recharges himself up from another equally powerful source: his son Deebo Jr. Opening up about how fatherhood made him a better player, he mentioned how even his 49ers’ teammates noticed a change in his game, calling it “dad strength.” The show gives an insight into his family life, proving him to be a loving father and partner to Mahogany. In the end, he has shown that the love for the sport will get you there, but the love for your family will keep you going.
Justin Jefferson, aka ‘Jets,’ has Already Taken Off
We’ve all wondered at some point what it’d be like to have an alter ego, that side of our personality that excites us, but we might not allow it to come out under normal circumstances. In JJ’s case, that’s who ‘Jets’ is, but he’s definitely not afraid to bring him out. Jets knows the power of a good outfit, as he has a fantastic closet and a chain collection that would make Mr. T jealous, but most importantly, he gives himself a confidence boost that he brings into the game every time. Ultimately, it’s hard to know where Justin ends and Jets starts, as he displays these bold and smooth qualities no matter what, which proves why he is now the highest paid non-QB player in the league. We hope the creator of “The Griddy” always keeps this tenacity, securing touchdowns that will undoubtedly give us new and improved versions of his trademark celebratory dance.
Amon-Ra St. Brown Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
There’s apparently only one thing Amon-Ra can’t do: quit. In a constant demonstration of his unwavering resilience and disciplined determination, it’s easy to see how he’s gotten to where he’s at by never giving up. The Detroit Lions receiver will achieve anything he sets himself to do, like learning German to speak fluently with his mom, train every day with his dad, or take his team to the playoffs while suffering three back-to-back-to-back injuries throughout the season. Amon-Ra is unstoppable, with a sense of perseverance that inspires everyone who witnesses him never to give up when the goal ahead is clear.
Davante Adams is on a Quest for Greatness
Constantly ranked among the top 10 (sometimes even the top 5) wide receivers of the league, Davante has had trouble finding his light in Las Vegas since joining the Raiders in 2022. However, on the show, we can see his ups and downs while navigating a team restructuring in hopes of building a more solid foundation. Despite these trials, the former Packer knows defeat is not an option, and the only way out is forward. He dealt with a shoulder injury throughout the season without letting it interrupt his performance, knowing his commitment to the team was essential to keep the machine moving. His search for greatness deserves a successful result, as he knows what he’s capable of and will not be content until it brings him the results he wants.
