Baseball Explained by your Favorite Summer Songs

When you think of music and baseball, I'm sure "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" comes to mind. While that is a fantastic tune and holds so many special memories for all of us, everyone's favorite summer songs might help you relate more to the MLB.

"Please, Please, Please" - Sabrina Carpenter & the Philadelphia Phillies

Sabrina's new single is all about not being let down in love. Throughout the song, she admits to the risks surrounding a relationship with someone who does not have the greatest track record. She also pleads with her partner not to embarrass her to "prove her right." Sabrina's relationship is easily comparable to being a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. Over the past few years, the Phillies have found their grove, appearing in the 2022 World Series and 2023 National League Championship. Phillies fans are loyal and passionate but know they are entering a non-committed relationship. Fans know that a season could fall apart at any time, even during game seven of the NL Championship, when they are playing at home, but that never stops us from supporting them. Like Sabrina, we Phillies fans know that we easily could be embarrassed, brought to tears, and proven right by teams like the Braves, Dodgers, and last year's Diamondbacks. Being a Phillies fan embodies Sabrina's lyrics, "Heartbreak is one thing, my egos another." We will always get over the heartbreak, but the sting of our egos takes years. After defending them and Rob Thompson's decision-making skills, we hope this is the year our boys get the job done!

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" - Taylor Swift & the New York Yankees

"Lights, camera, b*tch, smile!" is Alex Verdugo's motto this season after being traded to the New York Yankees from the Boston Red Sox this past offseason. Upon hearing the news, Verdugo was heartbroken. Not only was he leaving his beloved team, he was being traded to a division rival, leaving him angry and confused. Like Taylor, Alex's show had to go on. With his head held high, he embarked on his journey to New York, where team captain Aaron Judge welcomed him with open arms. This weekend, Alex returned to his former home and faced the music. Seeing that the Sox and Yankees are rivals, the Boston crowd took no sympathy for Alex, booing him with the rest of the NY squad. Despite the haters, Alex took a page from Taylor's book, rising from the ashes and putting on a show-stopping performance. During the game's first pitch, Alex hit a home run, leading to an 8-1 victory over his former team. Truly, you can do anything with a broken heart!

"I Had Some Help" - Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen & the Atlanta Braves

Michael Harris II & Brett Davis - USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Braves season has taken a turn for the worse. The Braves have been a consistent dynasty in the National League, appearing in multiple Red Octobers over the past couple of seasons. The Braves started strong this year, sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies in their opening series. However, things took a turn for the worse after multiple injuries. Ronald Acuna Jr, the reigning National League MVP, is out for the season with an ACL tear, pitchers Jimmy Herget and A.J. Minter are out indefinitely, and their star outfielder, Michael Harris II, was placed on the injured list this weekend. As Post and Morgan sing, "It takes two to break a heart in two," and injuries are not the only culprit in this heartbreaking season. Team morale is down, coaching is iffy, and they are having one of their worst-hitting seasons in history. The Atlanta Braves have fallen second in the NL East and are nine games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. It's only June, so there is still time for the Braves to turn this around!

"Training Season" - Dua Lipa & the Milwaukee Brewers

Training season is over for the Milwaukee Brewers. Last season, the Brewers were starting to regain their form, and the foundation they established last season has propelled them to powerhouse status this year. They lead the National League Central Division and have a .586 winning percentage. The Brewers have also sent the message that they are not to be messed with. During their opener in March, a fight broke out between the Brewers and the New York Mets after Rhys Hoskins slid into second, knocking over Jeff McNeil. Tensions boiled over into the next game of the series when reliever Yohan Ramirez was ejected after aiming a fastball at Hoskins' head. The Brewers also defended themselves in their series against the Tampa Bay Rays, resulting in numerous fines for both teams. In her hit single, Dua sings, "Can you compete? Now is your time; run when you hear that whistle blow. Are you on my team? Or stuck on the sidelines waiting for someone to tell you to go?" The Brewers have answered each of these questions - they are undoubtedly ready to compete and are in no way waiting on the sidelines.

"Birds of a Feather" - Billie Eilish & the Texas Rangers

The reigning World Series Champs remind us that birds of a feather really do stick together. No matter how far a Texas Ranger may stray, they are always part of the team. This was especially true for pitcher Jordan "Monty" Montgomery, who received his World Series ring after being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rangers GM, Chris Young, and manager, Bruce Bochy, presented Monty with his ring in a heartfelt moment on the diamond before Monty's past and present supporters. Fan favorite Robbie Grossman was also reacquired this year after being traded to the Chicago White Sox this offseason. Robbie was an essential part of the team's World Series win, and he was welcomed back with open arms. With twelve years of experience in the MLB, Chris Young explained how vital Robbie is to the team: "We're a young team and, I think, certainly somebody of Robbie's presence is going to help stabilize the lineup." The Rangers also know how to stick together off the field. A group of them, including Josh Smith, Corey Seager, and Andrew Kzizner, attended this year's American Country Music Awards. Whether they're on the field, at an award show, or with another team, Texas always feels like home.
