Moments For Monday: A Weekend Recap
Happy Monday! After an exciting and pretty wholesome weekend in sports, we put together a few of our top moments. Check them out.
5. Isabella Aparicio’s Standing Ovation
This tear-jerking video reminded us just how great humans can be. Thirteen-year-old Isabella Aparicio, a United States figure skater, lost her father and brother in the crash of Flight 5342 back in January and paid tribute to them with a beautiful routine on Sunday. The crowd responded with a standing ovation that sent chills down our spines. We can only imagine how much courage this performance took. Isabella, of course, was moved to tears, and we were right there with her.
You can see the full routine and the rest of the tribute show on Peacock. It truly was something special!
4. Columbus Blue Jackets & Detroit Red Wings Honor Johnny Gaudreau
In a heartwarming video posted to Instagram by ESPN, both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings showed their support for the Gaudreau family. Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed last August after being hit by a drunk driver the night before their sister's wedding. Johnny signed with the Blue Jackets in 2022 to be closer to his family. When the team took to the ice for the NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium, they were led by Johnny’s wife Meredith and their two young children. Meredith is expecting the couple’s third child in the coming months.
Although the Red Wings ultimately fell short of a victory against the Blue Jackets, 5-3, they also showed their support for the Gaudreau family during their pre-game. Seen loading onto their bus rocking different Johnny Gaudreau jerseys, there is no shortness in support for Johnny Hockey.
3. Steph Curry Dunks for the First Time in Six Years
We have been blessed with yet another memorable Steph Curry moment! Steph Curry dunked for the first time in six years in a matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers. You heard that right…six years! Standing on the shorter side of the NBA at 6 '2” and almost 37 years old, Steph dunking was a pretty impressive feat.
2. Brie Clark Completes the ‘Biles I’ for Clemson
The ‘Biles I’ was successfully completed for the first time in collegiate history. Brie Clark, a gymnast from Clemson University, shocked the crowd when she completed this legendary tumbling pass during their competition, the first ever to do it at the college level. A tumbling pass earning its name from the GOAT Simone Biles consists of a round-off back handspring into a double layout half twist–if that sounds crazy to you, it’s because it is!
In this adorable video posted later on Saturday night, Brie reacts to Simone by commenting on her video. The GOAT congratulated this young gymnast on her accomplishment with a comment saying, “& closing out black history month! YES MA’AM! iktr!!!”
1. Stefanos Tsitsipas Hits Back with an Iconic Instagram Caption
The King of the Court has spoken! After winning the men’s singles final in the Dubai Tennis Championship, Stefanos took to Instagram to celebrate his win. With a message to his haters, he posed with his new trophy and a caption saying, “They said my game was sinking…so I got myself a boat.” Some of our favorite tennis players, including Chris Eubanks and Naomi Osaka, paid Tsitsipas some respect for his iconic captions. Talk about a petty king!
