It’s Been a Long Time Coming: Amy Yang Obtains her First Major Title

AP News

Over the course of a remarkable 18-year career, Amy Yang has consistently demonstrated her prowess on the golf course. This past weekend, her unwavering dedication and skill were rewarded as she emerged victorious at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, securing her first-ever major title.

The triumph comes after competing in 75 major tournaments, coming close on several occasions but never reaching the top place. She was a runner-up in three of them and obtained multiple top 10 finishes, but her perseverance and drive finally got her the most coveted position: number one. “This has been the longest 18 holes I’ve ever played in my career,” Yang mentioned to caddie Jan Meierling moments before she secured the win.

Throughout the four days, Yang managed to maintain a favorable advantage. On Saturday, a 1-under 71 shot allowed her to enter the final round with a two-shot lead. She closed the tournament on Sunday with a three-shot victory at Sahalee.

I always wanted to win a major, and I came close several times. I started doubting myself if I was ever gonna win a major before I retire, and I’m so grateful and very happy

At 34, Amy is the second-oldest winner on the LPGA Tour after Angela Stanford, who won the 2018 Evian Championship at 40.

Finally, Yang has proven that resilience and hard work always pay off, no matter how long it takes. After this significant win, her focus is now on Paris 2024 as she prepares to represent South Korea as a member of their Olympic delegation.
