Forever in Our Hearts: A Tribute to Khyree Jackson
The sports world is mourning the untimely passing of Khyree Jackson, a promising cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings and a former standout at Oregon. At just 24 years old, Jackson's life was tragically cut short in a car accident early Saturday morning, an incident that also claimed two other lives.
Jackson, who the Vikings selected with the 108th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was involved in a devastating crash in Prince George's County, Maryland. According to the Maryland State Police, the accident occurred around 3:14 a.m. and involved three vehicles: a maroon Dodge Charger, a silver Infiniti Q50, and a silver Chevrolet Impala. Jackson, a passenger in the Charger, and Isaiah Hazel, the driver and Jackson's high school teammate, were pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony Lytton Jr., another passenger and former high school teammate, was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The Vikings organization confirmed the heartbreaking news, with head coach Kevin O'Connell expressing his deep sorrow.
“I am absolutely devastated by this news,” O’Connell said. “Khyree brought a vibrant energy to our team and facility. His confidence and engaging personality immediately drew his teammates to him. In the short time we spent together, it was clear Khyree was not only going to excel as a professional football player but also as a remarkable individual dedicated to his family and community. Words cannot express the loss we feel. My heart goes out to Khyree’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that Cori Clingman's Infiniti collided with the Charger while attempting to change lanes at a high speed. Clingman’s vehicle then struck the Chevrolet. Fortunately, Clingman, her two passengers, and the Chevrolet driver were not injured. Authorities suspect that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
Jackson's journey to the NFL was a testament to his resilience and determination. After taking a break from football following high school, he reignited his passion for the sport at community college, transitioning from wide receiver to cornerback. His talent and dedication led him to Alabama under the guidance of Nick Saban before he finished his collegiate career at Oregon, where he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors.
During the Vikings' Rookie Camp, Jackson made an immediate impact with his athletic ability and infectious spirit. His teammates and coaches quickly recognized his potential and his positive influence on everyone around him.
Khyree Jackson’s death is a profound loss for the Vikings, the NFL, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. As we remember Khyree Jackson, we honor his legacy both on and off the field, cherishing the memories of a young man who embodied perseverance, talent, and heart. His passing is a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
